Cascades Falls in Summer

Cascades Falls in Summer

The Cascades lies within the George Washington National Forest in Pembroke, VA, about 17 miles west of Blacksburg, VA. It's an official attraction and has 3.00 all day parking, a nice public restroom a few picnic tables at this level. The two mile hike (710' increase in elevation)can be done on two trails; the lower follows the creek and is a little challenging in places but many walk it daily, the upper takes you slightly away from the creek while offering some elevated views of it, both trails come back together just below the falls. The falls are quite an attraction and visitors can be found swimming in the tidal pool on hot summer days. There is an elevated walkway to the left of the falls offering a much closer side view. An excellent family hike.

I am visiting from the Pacific Northwest and had to say that I really enjoyed the trip to the falls. The trail that is on the creek has many spots to step off safely and take some nice pictures as well. The waterfall is worth the $3 park fee. If the other waterfalls are like this one, I might not go back to Washington State!!
